Flat panel
Abstract
A flat monochrome monitor and a flat color panel are presented. The principle is phosphor excitation by electrons from a gas discharge source. The active area on the screen is 12 in and the thickness is 2 1/3 in. The monochrome display matches the performance of a 14 in cathode ray tube monitor. On it, 28 x 80 alphanumeric characters can be displayed and the individually addressable 448 x 720 pixels may be used for graphics as well. Successful on line computer operation of the monitor is shown. Flat panels with full color capability and 288 x 720 single pixels corresponding to 288 x 240 color triplets were built, giving a real time TV display with gray scale and good resolution.
