Overview/current status of the Navstar Global Positioning System
Abstract
The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based, highly accurate, all-weather continuous navigation system that will permit users to obtain position, velocity, and time anywhere in the world. The GPS program is now under full scale development by the U.S. DOD and managed by the Air Force. During this development phase a constellation of five to six space vehicles is being maintained to support testing. A buildup of the constellation to 18 satellites and three active spares will begin late in 1986 and will take approximately two years to complete.
