Liquid column stability: Experiment 1 ES-331
Abstract
The Spacelab floating zone stability in zero gravity experiment to form a long cylindrical liquid bridge (10 cm), between 2 solid coaxial disks, to study the surface deformation and inner liquid motion resulting from the application of mechanical disturbances is described. The scheduled investigations were not accomplished due to the impossibility of holding the liquid interface anchored at the nominal disk edge, but considerable knowledge on experiment design, e.g., on the difficulty of getting a clean start, and on the role of inertia in bridge formation was acquired.
