In-orbit relative distances analysis for Ariane flights
Abstract
The attitude and roll control system (French designation SCAR) designed to separate multiple payloads in the Ariane third stage is characterized, and the results of simulations using the software program LANCELOT are compared with flight data. The reasons for and hazards of closely spaced orbits of simultaneously launched payloads and platform components are reviewed and illustrated with diagrams; the mission-analysis procedures are explained; the planned Ariane-3 launch of SPOT and Viking is analyzed as an example; and the success of the LANCELOT-simulation SCAR-sequence optimization effort is demonstrated with data from flights L7 and L8.
