Missions and technology for advanced communications satellite
Abstract
The missions and their related technology are described, focussing on the personalization of future satellite communication services. A personal communication system using the satellite is presented as a representative personal service. A result of the preliminary mission study on the personal communication system using the satellite in 50/40 GHz band is described. It elucidates that the earth station having an 30 cm-diameter antenna can be used for mutual voice-communication with a transmission rate of 64 kbit/s and link availability of 98 percent or above in the central area of Japan. Finally, an experimental communication system which is suitable for the personalized services, including satellite configuration, is described, for which the feasibility study is being conducted by Radio Research Laboratories, Japan, as an Advanced Communications Technology Satellite for Experiments (ACTS-E) program.
