Future hydrogen/oxygen launchers for Europe
Abstract
Five configurations of a post-Ariane-4 European launch vehicle, all based on the HM60 large cryogenic engine, are compared analytically in terms of mass, perfomance, trajectory, payload configuration, and cost. The results are presented in extensive graphs and tables. It is pointed out that the performance of the HM60 is not optimized for any of the five configurations at the present mixture ratio of 5.1; a ratio of 6.0 (or even 7.0 for the single-stage configuration) is recommended.
