COSPAS-SARSAT system evaluation in Norway
Abstract
The COSPAS-SARSAT concept involves the use of multiple satellites in low, near polar orbits to relay distress messages from aircraft and ships to dedicated ground stations around the world. This paper summarizes the Norwegian involvement in the COSPAS-SARSAT project and discusses the experience gained during the D&E phase. Norway's participation is that of an observer; a COSPAS-SARSAT receiver was installed in Tromso, Northern Norway in 1983. A D&E phase was begun in August 1983 to determine the system performance and to clarify the value of COSPAS-SARSAT to the SAR service.
