A study of the discharge of the continuous-wave argon ion laser
Abstract
The plasma of the positive column of a high-current low-pressure discharge in argon, used as the active medium of the CW argon ion laser, is investigated experimentally using optical, microwave, and probe methods of plasma diagnostics. Empirical expressions are obtained which relate the electric field, electron concentration, and the temperature and velocity of the directional motion of atoms, ions, and electrons to the discharge conditions. A wide range of internal plasma parameters is calculated semiempirically, and formulas are obtained which relate the principal internal plasma parameters to the external discharge characteristics. The inversion density of the argon ion laser is determined.
