Ariane 5 - A new launcher for the 90's
Abstract
The mission goals and initial design parameters for a prospective Ariane 5 rocket are discussed. The Ariane 5 would be a heavy lift launch vehicle capable of placing up to 3000 kg in GEO, 4000 kg satellites in sun-synchronous orbits, 15 ton space station modules and specialized units into LEO and launching the mini-Shuttle Hermes. Fairings will be increased to 10 m for Shuttle-density loads. An expendable launcher with a reusable third stage and a variable purpose upper stage is under consideration. The continued usage of cryogenic fuels and the HM60 engine is regarded as essential for meeting cost goals. First flight of the Ariane 5 is envisioned for 1995.
