The diffuse plasma boundary of the earth magnetosphere at various latitudes
Abstract
Data collected by the Prognoz spacecraft concerning the physical properties of the plasma boundary of the earth magnetosphere are reviewed. The energetic properties of the low-latitude and high-latitude plasma boundary layers are described, and the effect of solar wind variations on the dimensions of the boundary layers is discussed in detail. It is shown that the size of the boundary layer diminishes in relation to accelerations of the solar wind due to flare activity and geomagnetic disturbances. Data concerning the energetic characteristics of electrons near the magnetopause are compared with observations of energetic particles outside the magnetopause and plasma boundary.
