Space laser communications - Competition for microwaves
Abstract
Features of proposed laser communications systems capable of providing secure, high-data-rate communications between spacecraft and between ground stations and spacecraft are examined. Laser telescope systems are seen to have substantial advantages over microwave systems for communications. A diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser for communications is in the design stage. Topics addressed include: telescope and optical assembly, coding information for communications, pointing accuracy, and the survivability question.
