Groove guide for short millimetric waveguide systems
Abstract
A survey is given of previous work on groove guide, including an account of theoretical and experimental work at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology on the guide itself, on double-groove guide, and on components that have been developed. The basic guide consists of two identical parallel conducting walls containing grooves that face each other; the direction of propagation is along the groove. Components discussed include IMPATT sources, detectors, transitions to rectangular guide, bends, couplers, standing-wave detectors, and attenuators. It is shown that coupling between guide lengths can be carried out with low dimensional tolerances. At frequencies above 100 GHz, a complete system in groove guide including generation, transmission, manipulation and detection could be ideal.
