Research into an on-line device for monitoring contamination in fluids using ultrasonic techniques
Abstract
A prototype ultrasonic device for on-line monitoring of particles within lubricant and hydraulic systems was developed. The technique is shown to operate successfully with small hard particles in the range 30 to 1000 microns suspended in a lubricant and in a range of concentrations typical of lubricant and hydraulic systems. The device is shown to offer continuous information on particle size, concentration, and possibly material. Research needed to realize the full potential of the device, and in particular, overcoming the problems posed by entrained air, is detailed.
