Measurements of integral yields of charged secondary particles using neutral beams simulating a cometary fly-by
Abstract
Atomic and molecular beams bombarded surfaces covered with gold, aluminum and white conductive paint PCB-Z to provide input parameters for a model of plasma-spacecraft interactions during the Giotto Halley's comet fly-by mission. The targets were treated and cleaned similarily to the real spacecraft, i.e., the surfaces were not chemically clean. The average yield, derived using all gases at their respective ram energy on aluminum and PCB-Z, is 20% for secondary electrons and 0.4% for ions.
