Simulation of the interaction of single-pulsed optical lasers with targets in a vacuum
Abstract
Computer simulations are presented of the interaction of perturbed laser beam on an aluminum target at pulse widths from .05 to 2.0 microsec, and intensities from 5 x 10 to the 7th power to 5 x 10 to the 13th power W/sq cm, at laser wavelengths varying from 0.25 micrometers (KrF laser) to 10.6 micrometers (CO2 laser). Focus is on impulse coupling and identifying the critical processes for momentum generation. Uncertainties in modeling are discussed.
