TOS and TOS/AMS - New capabilities for the STS
Abstract
Orbital Sciences Corp. (OSC), in partnership with a team of aerospace industry contractors and NASA, is developing a new generation of Space Shuttle upper stages based on space-proven technologies and a modular design approach. These upper stage vehicles, the Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS), the Apogee and Maneuvering Stage (AMS) and the two-stage TOS/AMS, are being developed and produced using the largest investment of private capital in the history of space transportation. These commercial stages are being developed for OSC by the Martin Marietta Corp., with NASA providing engineering assistance and technical facilities. These flexible, low-cost, reliable stages provide new capabilities for, and enhance, NASA's shuttle.
