Domain configuration in thin magnetic films, measurements and calculations
Abstract
Material parameters of thin magnetic films, i.e., magnetization, domain period, anisotropy constant, wall energy, and the field strength at which microwave power is absorbed, were studied with models in which the impact of the domain structure is taken into account. Four films were measured using the vibrating sample magnetometer, electron spin resonance, and Kerr microscope methods. High Q factor films show totally different resonance and magnetization characteristics than those with a low Q, although both have strip domains for a field H=0. A minimal Q (with and without mu-effect) for which a stable perpendicular magnetization is possible, was calculated. A proof for the existence of domains owing to the mu-effect was found. A model in which the domain period can be described up to an H-value for which the domains are contracted to bubbles, was confirmed.
