A dual-mode driver automatic level control amplifier for a direct broadcast satellite transponder
Abstract
This paper describes the design and performance of a 12-GHz GaAs FET amplifier used as a driver amplifier for high-power (230 watts) TWTAs on a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) transponder. The amplifier provides two modes of operation: an automatic output signal level control (ALC) mode and a fixed selected gain mode. The amplifier has 68.5 dB gain with 70 dB dynamic range in the ALC mode and 46 dB gain control dynamic range in the fixed gain mode. This amplifier provides an output power of +1 to +17 dBm in 2-dB steps over an input power range of -45.5 dBm to +1.5 dBm over the frequency range of 12.2 to 12.7 GHz.
