RCA advanced Satcom - The first all-solid-state communications satellite
Abstract
The RCA Advanced Satcom Satellite with solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) in 24 transponder channels is described. The measured transmission performance data demonstrate the significant improvements in linearity provided by the SSPAs. An overview of the communications network of Alascom and RCA Americom in which the Satcom V, IR and IIR operate is presented. The operational results to date show a two to threefold increase in communications capacity with the use of 8.5-watt SSPAs.
