Flexible satellite communications - The Italsat example
Abstract
A 20/30 GHz satellite system for Italy (Italsat) is described. Italsat is an experimental/pre-operational satellite designed to offer flexible communications within Italian territory in the late 1980s. The main system characteristics are a speed of 147.456 Mpbs, and a frame length of 32 rms. The system will provide both a 32 Kbps telephone channel and a videoconference system. The system is designed to offer the same advantages of DA techniques and spot beam coverage. The operational version of the satellite should be on line by the late 1990s.
