Communications satellites by General Electric
Abstract
The current status of General Electric involvement in the communications-satellite industry is examined with specific attention given to the DSCS-III military communications satellite and the BSE (the Japanese Broadcast Satellite for Experimental Purposes) and BS-2 broadcast satellites. The DSCS-III features X-band multiple transponders and a multiple antenna configuration, offering high flexibility and high capacity for both strategic and tactical communications. The BSE, equipped with two 100-W transponders and a shaped beam antenna covering the principal and remote Japanese islands, enabled early experimentation with broadcast satellites. The BS-2 is a follow-on operational system having similar performance characteristics but improved technology, such as helix type high-power TWTs.
