Rapid determination and ephemeris prediction of satellite orbits from an earthorbiting platform
Abstract
Determination of orbits using only observations of apparent position without knowledge of distance is known as the 'angles only' problem. Rapid solution to the angles only problem and propagation of the orbit is the subject of this paper. The method of Laplace is employed, yielding the orbital elements at the epoch of osculation. An osculating orbit serves as the input to ephemeris generators. A detailed derivation of the equations necessary for orbit determination is presented and an algorithm for ephemeris prediction is described. The treatment of certain aberration terms is presented also.
