Operational characteristics of the OMEGA short-wavelength laser fusion facility
Abstract
Twelve beams of the OMEGA, 24 beam direct-drive laser facility were converted to 351-nm wavelength operation. The performance characteristics of this short-wavelength facility will be discussed. Beam-to-beam energy balance of + or - 2.3% and on-target energy, at 351 nm, in excess of 70 J per beam were demonstrated. Long-term performance ( 600 shots) of the system was optimized by appropriate choice of index matching liquid, optical materials and coatings. The application of this system in direct-drive laser fusion experiments will be discussed.
