Electromagnetic wave amplification associated with cyclotron resonance in a gas
Abstract
Cyclotron resonance in a gas in the field of an intense electron beam is analyzed in terms of electromagnetic wave amplification. A series of self-consistent Maxwell-Vlasov equations is derived to find the wave amplification factor for a Gaussian electron beam, based on the energy and angular scatter of the beam. The behavior of the amplification in extreme cases is examined, and the results are discussed in detail.
