Secondary-emission microwave discharge near a wall in an insulating magnetic field
Abstract
One-sided secondary-emission resonant discharges (SERDs) of microwaves in high-power generators and amplifiers are investigated analytically, with a focus on SERDs occurring near a wall in an insulating magnetic field parallel to the discharge surface. An approximate theory is constructed for both the initial and the fully developed phases under a series of simplifying assumptions; numerical results are compared with the experimental data of Ganichev et al. (1972) in graphs; and good qualitative agreement is obtained. Expressions for the SERD development time and power absorption are given, and implications for the breakdown mechanism in devices such as high-power millimeter-range electron generators are indicated.
