Problems of ARCADE-3 satellite attitude determination
Abstract
Due to partial failure of the infrared Earth sensor, the attitude of ARCADE-3 satellite in a polar orbit was calculated using magnetometer and Sun sensor data. The origins of a lower precision in attitude calculation are examined, including instrument bias, spacecraft magnetic noise, and the polar orbit. A correction function by which the attitude error is reduced by half is described. The importance of the infrared Earth sensor in determining accurate attitudes is discussed.
