Trial of the inert gas system on RFA Bayleaf
Abstract
The inert gas (IG) system and its operation are described and the benefits of IG on tanker safety are discussed. The effect of IG on AVCAT F-44 quality was determined during a trial on a tanker ship. No adverse effects on the AVCAT cargo are revealed and the benefits of employing IG systems on tankers are considerable if low flash point products are carried, e.g., CIVGAS F-50. For higher flash point fuels an IG system is not essential.
