Influence of Prandtl number on natural convection heat transfer correlations
Abstract
The influence of fluid properties, specifically the Prandtl number, on previously developed heat transfer measurements in water-filled enclosures is examined. According to the available literature, changing the Prandtl number from 0.7 (air) to 5 (water) increases the heat transfer by roughly 15% for various geometries. This effect was tested and confirmed in a cubical test cell by replacing the water in the test cell with air and repeating a series of experiments. The results were then compared with previously developed heat transfer correlations in water.
