A transmission analysis for the use of 2-4 PSK modulation in satellite broadcasting
Abstract
Computer simulation studies of differentially coherent and coherent demodulation of 2-4 PSK for direct satellite broadcasting are described. The simulation models include multiple-filtering and nonlinear amplification, but do not take into account synchronization of the burst-mode digital sound interleaved with the analog video signal. Low performance degradations are obtained for coherent and differentially coherent demodulation, when simple (Butterworth and Gaussian) receiver filter types are used. The optimum receiver filter bandwidth depends on the type of filter and the type of demodulator. Adjacent-channel interference; the effects of linear gain and group-delay distortions; and carrier frequency errors at the input to the differentially coherent demodulator are discussed.
