Calculation of the excess inductance of a microstrip discontinuity
Abstract
A numerical solution for the excess inductance of a microstrip discontinuity is obtained by the method of moments. This discontinuity is a via between two semiinfinite infinitesimally thin perfectly conducting strips. Above a ground plane, these strips are immersed in a medium that has constant permeability. Both strips run in the zdirection, but they are not necessarily collinear. The excess inductance is the inductance in excess of that which would result if the asymptotic inductance per unit length was assumed to exist up to z=0 on the lefthand strip and beginning with z=0 on the righthand strip. The asymptotic inductance per unit length of one of the strips is that which would exist if the strip was infinitely long.
