Prediction of the temperature characteristics in intermittent, free turbulent shear layers
Abstract
The velocity and temperature characteristics in intermittent, self-preserving free turbulent shear flows were calculated for the heated plane jet, the heated axisymmetric jet, and the far-field plane wake of a heated cylinder. An intermittency model of turbulence is developed to include the calculation of the conditioned temperature variables. Transport equations are presented for these variables and a model representing conduction heat-transfer at the turbulent/nonturbulent interface is suggested. Thermal measurements are reviewed for each flow situation and the most reliable data are identified. Conditional measurements are emphasized. Predictions agree with experimental data.
