The commercialization of meteorological and land remote-sensing satellites
Abstract
The potential impact of the proposal to transfer both civilian weather satellites and the LANDSAT remote sensing satellite system to the private sector is examined. Issues discussed include the importance of METSAT and LANDSAT data; whether remotely sensed data is a public good; data continuity; international data exchange; international relations and LANDSAT; international competition; national security; monopoly and competition; government's role after the transfer; and the need for legislation. A list of the witnesses heard is included.
