Abstract
Several facets of the optical approach to network interconnection are examined. The status of electrical circuit interconnections and the expected performance advantages provided by the optical approach are reviewed. The structural and electrical characteristics of optical components suitable for circuit integration are considered, and the development status of compound semiconductor integrated optoelectronic circuits is reviewed. Finally, more sophisticated circuit designs having attractive performance potential are presented.
