Development of space holography
Abstract
The capability to transmit information about transparent objects is a valuable asset of holography. A wide variety of the physiocochemical properties of such objects can be investigated. The high resolution achievable in holography due to the absence of lens optics which distort an image, the high sensitivity to change in position or condition of an object being investigated, the possibility of superimposing several recordings on a single hologram and some other possibilities have major significance. Unfortunately, quite a few difficulties are encountered on the way to using the listed qualities of holography, and the number of difficulties becomes even greater when attempting to realize the advantages of holography in space. For the exploitation of holographic installations in space, suitable laser was selected and the size and mass of the installation reduced. The installation was made simpler in tuning and use, its reliability of operation increased, and such vibration resistance was made as to make the apparatus suitable for placement in orbit.
