Amplitude-frequency method of measuring phase of reflection coefficient
Abstract
Methods and means for measuring the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) (modulus of the reflection coefficient) in microwave devices are investigated. Two methods of phase measurement of the reflection coefficient with a panoramic VSWR-meter are proposed. In the first method both the phase and the modulus of the reflection coefficient of the load are determined on the basis of two relations involving the reflection coefficients of the quadrupole and the waveguide segment as well as the reflection coefficient at the input to the VSWR-meter, the length of the waveguide segment, and the wavelength at which they are all easily measured (assuming negligible losses in the waveguide segment). According to the second method, the phase of the reflection coefficient of the load is calculated from measurements at any frequency which corresponds to R(min) and the condition for the input VSWR becoming minimum. The accuracy of the first method is determined by the accuracy of VSWR measurement, while the accuracy of the second method depends on the directional coupler in the reflectometer.
