Rules for post-detector detection of weak signals in non-Gaussian noise of unknown power
Abstract
A general method is presented for constructing post-detector rules for detecting weak signals whose envelope is characterized by a non-Gaussian distribution function. Locally most powerful ranking detection rules, as well as parametric noise-invariant detection rules, are derived. The explicit form of the corresponding characteristics is obtained for examples of noise for which the envelope is described by a Nakagami or Weibull distribution. Comparison of the structure of the ranking and invariant statistics indicates that the ranking statistics are simpler. The results are based on a formula derived for the local representation for the density of the envelope of the signal noise mixture.
