The maximum power received by an antenna in a lossy medium
Abstract
It is shown that the maximum power received by an antenna in a lossy medium is finite in the case of a fixed primary incident field. In this case there is no need to limit the directivity of the receiving antenna, as is necessary in order to obtain finite maximum power in the absence of losses. Formulas are given for the maximum received power and the optimal field distribution which the antenna must produce in the transmission mode over a given surrounding surface in order to obtain reception of maximum power. The results are illustrated on the example of a linear wire antenna.
