Measurement of the Leptonic Structure Functions of the Photon at Pep
Abstract
At beam energies available at the PEP e('+)e(' ) storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center the crosssection for twophoton particle production is sufficiently large to warrant an investigation of this O((alpha)('4)) process. Of particular interest is the twophoton process ee (>) ee(mu)(mu) at nonzero Q('2). This channel is not only relatively easy to observe experimentally but also serves as a model for the process ee (>) eeqq. For the case of inelastic e(gamma) scattering the crosssection could be parameterized in terms of the photon structure functions F(,1)(x, Q('2)) and F(,2)(x, Q('2)). In this thesis I will present data on the process ee (>) ee(mu)(mu) collected by the TwoPhoton collaboration (PEP9) at PEP. For the subset of data which proceeds by inelastic e(gamma) scattering I will present a procedure for extracting the QED photon structure functions and apply this method to the data.
