Unsteady free-convection heat transfer inside an annular cavity
Abstract
Two-dimensional, unsteady, free-convection heat transfer between horizontal concentric cylinders was studied. Photographs and qualitative descriptions of the flow patterns obtained for various operation conditions of temperature difference between cylinders are presented. The unsteady flow patterns predicted by the finite-domain solution are compared with photographs of the flow and good qualitative agreement is found. The mathematical model is used to obtain data on transient temperature profiles, velocity fields, and flow patterns for a variety of Rayleigh numbers, diameter ratio, and Prandtl numbers.
