Smith-Purcell source of intense millimeter-range radiation
Abstract
Experimental results are reported from operation of a high-power Smith-Purcell source of mm-radiation excited by an intense relativistic electron beam. A corrugated circular waveguide served as an electrodynamic system for the flimatron. The radiated power was monitored using Si detectors and calorimetry. The data were applied to define formulae for the gyrofrequency and index of the nontransmission band. Decreases in the power of longwave radiation in the presence of magnetic fields above a certain strength are discussed. The device is noted to have had a 4 percent efficiency.
