Generation of a single nanosecond pulse (10.6 micron wavelength) with high contrast
Abstract
A laser oscillator in a CO2 multistage laser which features a regenerative amplifier is described. The oscillator consists of a mirror, a Ge beam splitter, a NaCl plane-parallel plate, a plane mirror and iris diaphragms. The configuration was tested in a device called the Polinom laser, which had 0.5 J energy, a 3 nsec pulse width at half maximum, a 1:1 million contrast and a divergence of about 0.0005. Details of the regenerative amplifier are provided. It is noted that the oscillator is basically controlled with a high voltage thyratron.
