Dependence of specific energy loss on target thickness for low velocity ions: 16O --> C
Abstract
We have measured the energy loss of low velocity 16O ions in thin carbon foils of different thicknesses from 4-25 μg cm -2 using a time-of-flight technique. The foil thicknesses were determined from 4He energy losses. We observe that the specific energy loss for the thicker foils exceeds that for a 4 μg cm -2 foil by ∼ 20% at v ∼ 0.6 vO, which qualitatively agrees with results obtained for the 20Ne → C system. The results are interpreted within the framework of the Meyer-Klein-Wedell theory.
