Extending sampling to Type II phase-locked loops
Abstract
Part 1 of this investigation has been concerned with the stability requirements and transient response of a Type I control-loop, taking into account an analysis on the basis of a use of Z-transforms. In this concluding article, similar expressions are derived for the Type II control loop, whle the Z-transform analysis is extended to permit a detailed examination of the output phase-noise spectrum from a sampled PLL synthesizer. Attention is given to the open-loop gain for the ideal Type II control loop, the phase-noise performance of a candidate PLL synthesizer, and the power spectral density at the synthesizer output.
