Reliability considerations for satellite TWTs
Abstract
It is pointed out that the reliability of the travelling-wave tube (TWT) can be described in terms of the probability distribution function for a TWT failure within operating time. The present investigation has the objective to obtain a realistic description of the relative failure rate throughout life of a satellite TWT. In connection with this aim, independent failures in three time domains are considered. Early failures are revealed during n screening stages at times during processing. 'Random failures' represent those unpredictable failures of the TWT, which occur after final acceptance testing of the tube under operational conditions. The third time domain is concerned with 'wear-out failures', taking into account the strong increase in the failure rate toward the end of the TWT life.
