A kiloparsec radio jet in the nucleus of the SO galaxy NGC 1218 (3C 78).
Abstract
Merlin observations of the S0 galaxy NGC 1218 resolve the nucleus into a small 2-arcsec (approximately 1 kpc) jet emanating from a flat-spectrum core. The size of the jet is similar to that of jets seen in the nuclei of some Seyfert galaxies rather than the larger-scale jets seen in many radio galaxies, although, unlike Seyfert nuclei, energy is escaping from the central regions of this galaxy to form an extensive radio halo. It is suggested that high-resolution observations of the steep-spectrum cores in other radio galaxies will reveal structures similar to that seen in NGC 1218.
