The influence of a relay system on the radiation characteristics of a high power laser in vicinity of a focus
Abstract
The influence of a relay system on the radiation characteristics of an electric field before and after focusing of a highpower Ndglass laser beam are investigated theoretically. A mathematical description of the relay system is presented, and the distribution of the electric field in the focal plane is evaluated on the basis of a numerical solution of the wave equation. The numerical solution takes into account the resonance effects of the interaction between the radiation and the medium; the nonlinearity of the refraction index; and the diffraction and linear losses of the system. A graphic illustration of the numerical results is given showing the two regions of laser propagation in the presence of a relay system; a region bounded by the plane of the output lens of the relay system and the plane of the image; and a second region extending beyond the latter plane in the direction of propagation.
