Investigation of the electron-beam-controlled CO2 laser amplifier
Abstract
A prototype electron beam controlled CO2 laser amplifier useful for thermonuclear fusion studies is discussed. Its principle of operation is briefly described, and the results of tests of the electron gun in the amplifier are examined. Measurements of the small signal gain coefficient and the density of the energy stored in the active medium as functions of various parameters of the amplifier are reported. The energy of the amplifier within the range of nanosecond pulses is discussed with particular emphasis of the advantages of operating at pressures higher than the atmospheric pressure. The results confirm the usefulness of the amplifier as a subsystem of a larger laser system.
