The structure of detonations with large activation energy and low heat release is investigated analytically, extending the treatment of Lu and Ludford (1982) and Stewart and Ludford (1983). It is shown that the detonation solution, like the analogous deflagration formula, assumes the simple analytical form of a generalization of the gasdynamic shock in this case. All detonations not far removed from the Chapman-Jouguet point are found to be characterized by this formula. Calculations are also included for deflagrations near the Chapman-Jouguet point.
