Permissible thermal loads on cooled laser mirrors under nonuniform illumination
Abstract
Temperature fields, thermoelastic deformations, and stresses are calculated for cooled laser mirrors in the form of a simply supported or clamped flat circular plate, with one (reflecting) side of the plate illuminated by a steady laser beam and the other cooled by a coolant. It is shown that the displacements associated with the flexural deformation of the reflecting surface are maximum when the ratio of the laser beam diameter to the mirror diameter is 0.6. The limiting heat fluxes leading to melting in the center of the mirror or producing a given displacement and stress level are determined.
