Generating analogue FM pulses using a 1 bit digital technique
Abstract
The present investigation is concerned with the development of a method of generating sinusoidal frequency-modulated pulses using a 1 bit digital technique. Attention is given to the intuitive development of the frequency-modulated square wave (FMSW) spectrum, the analysis of the FMSW spectrum, the time quantization of the zero crossings, pulse compression of an FMSW, and aspects of FMSW generation. The method has the stability of a digital system, but avoids the need for a fast D/A converter. The spectrum of an FMSW is shown to consist of a series of harmonics of increasing bandwidth of the form associated with the modulation law being used.
